Periodic solution of a scalar delay equation

Purely imaginary characteristic roots produce oscillatory solutions. In particular, $r\tau =-\pi /2$ gives $\lambda =\pm i\pi /(2\tau )$ and the real solution $\cos (\pi t/(2\tau ))$.
