Mountain-wave cutoff

A steady hill pattern seen by a uniform flow of speed $U$ has intrinsic frequency magnitude $Uk$. It radiates a propagating internal wave only for $k\le N/U$; above this cutoff the vertical wavenumber is imaginary and the disturbance is evanescent.
