Connected-space zero-product dichotomy

If continuous functions $f,g$ on a connected space satisfy $fg=0$ and never vanish simultaneously, then the disjoint open sets $\{f\ne 0\}$ and $\{g\ne 0\}$ cover the space. One is empty, so one function vanishes identically.
